New van registration figures for the first ten months of 2017 show that the Ford Transit Custom has enjoyed the biggest increase in sales of any model on Irish roads. There were 1,038 new registrations in that period this year, compared to just 173 in 2016. That’s a massive 500% increase. That big discount is thanks to Ford’s current ‘Clean Up’ offer. You may have heard the radio ads:

Ford says that the ‘Clean Up’ offer is to encourage people to move from older vehicles to new, environmentally-friendly, ones. It’s certainly a good financial incentive. For example, a popular model of the Transit Custom – the 205 Short Wheel Base 105PS – has a usual guide retail price of €24,000. With the ‘Clean Up’ offer, that drops to just €20,500.

As you may expect, there are terms and conditions. Ford says:

This offer applies to new Transit units ordered by December 31st 2017 and registered by January 31st 2018 at participating Ford Dealers. This offer applies to trade-in passenger commercial vehicles, which are taxed, and insured at the time of trade in and built prior to 2015. Qualifying vehicles must also have a valid NCT certificate at time of trade in.

The 181 Ford Transit Custom – new design

Firstly, there’s how it’s got a bold new design. It sports a new three-bar Transit grille which was inspired by Ford’s latest passenger cars and dynamic new LED Daytime running lights and HID Xenon headlights.

Also new is a re-engineered Ford EcoBlue 2.0 litre diesel engine. Ford says it cuts emissions to 148g/km, and can deliver fuel efficiency of 49.8 mpg.

There is a choice of 105PS, 130PS and 170PS power options. Both the 130 PS and 170 PS engines are available with a new six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. This is designed to provide a smooth and relaxing driving experience, especially in busy stop-start traffic. The transmission allows you to change gear manually if you prefer, using the facia-mounted gearshift. It also provides the ability to lock out gears in more challenging driving conditions, e.g. on slippery surfaces or steep gradients.
