No one paid too much heed at first because we tend to be a bit preoccupied with new-car sales. The commercials sector has always been regarded as a prime indicator of the real state of affairs.
That’s where your small business works. If those people are buying new vehicles, something is stirring. If they are buying in significant numbers, then there is a rising tide. Based on the figures available it would seem that the latter seems to be true.
We can see this when we look at the SIMI statistics for the past year.
Behind all the features about new-car sales and increasing orders for cars over €100,000, Light Commercial Vehicles and Heavy Goods Vehicles are being bought in ever increasing numbers by the people who will be, and always have been, at the coalface of so called ‘real-world business’.
For the whole of 2012 there were 6,860 Light Commercials bought. There was a slight increase on this last year with 6,919 Light Commercial Vehicles bought and 782 Heavy Goods Vehicles.
This year, 2014, is where we have started to see a huge jump in the number of commercial vehicles bought. Up to June 30 of this year, the SIMI figures show that Light Commercial Vehicles are motoring ahead with 9,380 commercials registered already.
That is a massive 36.34% increase on last year and looking at the trend it seems it will continue for some time.
Heavy Goods Vehicles, were running at 1,130 up to the end of June, according to the SIMI figures and that puts them over 45% ahead of last year’s sales for the corresponding period.
The biggest selling models include Ford’s Transit van, the Volkswagen Caddy, Citroen Berlingo, Land Rover Discovery, Peugeot Partner, Renault Master, Ford Transit Connect SWB, Toyota Landcruiser, Volkswagen van series, Mercedes Sprinter.
With the increase in van and commercial vehicle sales, insurers have seen an increase of people taking out new insurance policies. Also with the collapse of Setanta Insurances earlier this year there has been more competition than ever in the commercial vehicle insurance market than ever.
