Why More Drivers in Ireland Are Choosing Hybrid Vans
Hybrid vans in Ireland are gaining serious traction - and for good reason. According to the SEAI, transport is one of the largest sources of energy-related CO₂ emissions in the country. Hybrid vans help reduce that impact, offering better fuel efficiency and a lower carbon footprint without fully committing to electric. They’re ideal for mixed driving. That includes urban stop-starts and longer motorway hauls. More manufacturers are getting on board with better options than ever before.Top Hybrid Vans to Watch in 2025
1. Ford Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid
The Ford hybrid van range is led by the Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid, which has quickly become a go-to for Irish tradesmen and delivery drivers. It combines a 1.0L petrol engine with an electric motor, offering up to 53km of pure electric driving - perfect for city trips. Its smooth handling and generous cargo space make it a practical and future-ready option. Plus, the plug-in option gives you that flexibility to charge at home or on the go. 2. Volkswagen Transporter
If you're searching for a hybrid Transporter van, you might need to hold out just a little longer. At the moment, the Volkswagen Transporter is available in two main versions: the reliable turbodiesel (TDI) and the fully electric e-Transporter. However, a new plug-in hybrid van is officially on the way. Volkswagen has confirmed that a hybrid version will launch in 2026, combining electric efficiency with combustion-engine flexibility. This will be ideal for businesses needing range without going fully electric. So, while it’s not on the market just yet, it’s definitely one to watch if you’re planning ahead.
3. LEVC VN5
The LEVC VN5 is a plug-in series hybrid van combining a 31 kWh battery with a 1.5 L petrol range-extender. It offers around 93 km of electric-only range and a total range close to 500 km. It’s built on the same platform as the electric London taxi, so it’s designed for durability, frequent stop-starts, and tight city manoeuvring. The VN5 also delivers over 800 kg of payload capacity and enough cargo space for two Euro pallets. This makes it a practical option for urban trades and light commercial work. While new models aren’t widely available in Ireland yet, you can find used ones on the market. Just keep in mind the additional costs like import taxes and VRT if you’re considering bringing one in.
